Does Removing Facial Hair Cause Wrinkles?

We all can probably remember when we first started to remove facial hair, but after a while, it starts to become more frequent the older we get.

Facial hair removal is not new. Many women (and some men!) have always hunted for hair between the eyebrows or above the upper lip. Maintaining our facial hair, highlights other facial features and improves other characteristics of our face. But Nowadays, we have been removing facial hair more frequently and as hair removal technology has been advancing, we have new ways of removing unwanted facial hair, for example, the latest and best way being, laser or IPL hair removal.

More and more women are opting to remove the fine downy hair that covers their cheeks, nose and forehead, for various reasons: better makeup hold, optimal skin care penetration, softer skin, etc. Although, we all want to remove facial hair quickly, and some of us permanently, have you ever thought that removing facial hair may actually increase the appearance of  wrinkles on our face?

The fact that we get wrinkles on our face over time cannot be avoided. However, sugar, fat, nicotine and alcohol in particular can accelerate their development. But there are tips and tricks that can help you fight wrinkles. Our face offers room for numerous types of wrinkles, which are due to our facial expressions – and thus somehow also characterize us and make us unique.

Yes, there is different ways of removing facial, like, waxing, threading, shaving, depilatory’s cream and laser, but which ones have been shown to increase the appearance of wrinkles? And which don’t have any aging effects?

Let’s find out and see.

Waxing is a hair removal technique in which we pull out the hair from the roots. Once we wax the area, new hairs grow. The more you wax, the slower the hair grows. The hair starts to get thinner and softer. Here, people that wax have different opinions, many say doing it causes damage to your skin, resulting in temporary reddening or pimples and can cause wrinkles in your skin if done regularly, which in most cases it is. In regards to ageing and wrinkles, waxing is known to cause premature aging of the skin.

During waxing, the facial hairs are pulled out together with the hair root. For this method to be successful, the hairs should be at least half a centimeter long. Only in this way do they adhere reliably to the wax strip. You can easily perform waxing with a cold wax strip at home.

Here’s how:

  • Warm cold wax strips from the drugstore between your fingers and place them on the area of skin to be waxed.
  • Smooth the strip and let it work according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
  • Then pull off against the direction of growth.

Threading is an easy and fast way of removing unwanted hair and most commonly used on the face. It offers precision and like waxing, it also removes hair from the roots. When it’s done on a weekly basis, it damages the follicles, which results in hair growing less and when you start adding it to your weekly or two weekly routine, your hair doesn’t grow back as often. In regards to causing wrinkles, there is no scientific evidence if doing it causes wrinkles.

The big advantage of the threading method is that it allows you to pluck the hairs at the same time in the same line. The result? Very clean, nothing to say. The eyebrow line is perfectly defined. A technique that also offers a great deal of precision, even the finest hair is plucked. This method is a natural extraction of the hair, without the use of any product or heat, and therefore does not cause skin irritation, allergic reaction, and does not cause pimples or irritation.

Shaving doesn’t remove the hair from the roots, rather removing hair only the surface. Beauty professionals say that the habit of shaving helps the removal of dead skins cells and other skin impurities. Shaving promotes your skin’s exfoliation, preventing wrinkles from forming.

With a razor, facial hair can be removed particularly quickly. The method is also quite simple and the necessary equipment are usually already in the bathroom cabinet. However, the hairs that grow back appear darker, as they have not yet been bleached by the sun. In addition, the soft tips are missing after shaving, so that the hairs feel stubbly.

Laser and IPL hair removal works in a concentrated area, aiming light beams at each individual hair. The contained pigment in the hair absorbs the light, causing the damage in the entire follicle. Depending on how much you do of laser to remove your facial hair, it will eventually never grow back or it takes a lot of time to grow again. Scientific tests have shown this is the most useful and efficient method of long-term removal. It doesn’t cause wrinkling but it’s the most expensive way of removing facial hair.

Depilatories are known to be fast and effective. They don’t wax or remove the roots from the hair but they dissolve the hair at the root’s surface. It doesn’t hurt but you have to apply the depilatory cream regularly if you want to keep the unwanted hair away.  When you use the depilatory, in few days it grows and you have to remove again. They don’t cause wrinkles but they can contain a lot of chemical products, which can cause problems for your skin.

Based on each method of removing unwanted hair, we saw that some types of hair removal such as waxing and threading can cause pre-mature skin ageing and wrinkles, however there is methods of removing facial hair which don’t cause wrinkles too. What is important to note that each way of removing facial hair has a bad and a good side. But our best advice is the same dermatologists give: if you want to avoid wrinkles, regardless of removing facial hair, always wear sunscreen and keep a good daily skin ritual.

What causes wrinkles?

As we age, the skin also ages: the elastic fibers, skin fat and connective tissue in the middle layer of the skin shrink. As a result, the skin’s elasticity diminishes.  The causes of facial skin wrinkles are related to the production of hyaluronic acid, collagen and elastin.

Although the main cause of wrinkles is the effect of age, the environment and lifestyle can also play an important role in their formation. Smoking, alcohol and stress are for example external parameters that promote skin aging. But that’s not all, air pollution will damage the tissues, because it boosts the production of free radicals, which are largely responsible for the appearance of wrinkles.

Fragile, the skin wrinkles with age. Cellular aging is the primary cause of wrinkles, but it is not the only one. The appearance of wrinkles is also linked to health, skin care, the sun and diet. With all these factors, the epidermis of the face undergoes a slackening and a loss of elasticity. The frown lines on the forehead and the expression lines around the eyes appear.

The appearance of wrinkles on the skin can have various origins, whether due to genetic predisposition, external agents, bad lifestyle habits, overexposure to the sun, stress, etc. However, waxing once a month or every three weeks, with the right wax and the right gestures, does not cause wrinkles.
