Like every organ of our body, the skin is also subject to the effects of age. As we age, the renewal of skin cells slows down. Older cells get accumulated and give the impression of a blurred complexion, which is also responsible for skin dryness that is often the primary source of discomfort for aged skin.
If the dryness is not corrected, wrinkles will more easily leave their mark on the skin, especially since the skin tends to become thinner. At the same time, changes in the dermis appear, responsible for its loss of tone and sagging, due to the melting of fatty and muscular tissues that no longer play their supporting role. The volume and appearance of the face gradually change while wrinkles deepen.
Although aging of our skin is a natural process, it is also greatly influenced by our lifestyle and environment. We cannot stop the clock, but we can certainly reduce its effects and slow down the process. As we age, the collagen and elastin production in the skin decreases, reducing skin elasticity and firmness. This causes sagging, wrinkling and age spots. Some other factors like dehydration, unhealthy diets, air pollution and toxins contribute to the reduction of collagen in the skin. High stress levels also cause premature aging.
In addition to a healthy lifestyle, essential oils help renew skin cells. Essential oils with anti-oxidant and anti-radicular properties should therefore be preferred. They are a safe and good alternative extracted from natural sources –plants. I use them for healing wounds, scars, and for maintaining healthy skin. I have compiled a list of the best essential oils for aging skin and recipes that will not only slow the aging process but also keep your skin youthful and refreshed.
